Tubular Daylighting Devices

Tubular daylighting devices (TDDs), also known as tubular skylights or light tubes, are architectural products designed to capture natural daylight from the roof and deliver it into interior spaces through a highly reflective tube. They are an efficient and effective way to bring natural light into areas of a building that do not have direct access to windows or skylights.

Key characteristics

Daylight Capture: TDDs use a rooftop dome or collector to capture sunlight. This component is designed to maximize the amount of light collected, even from low-angle sunlight.

Reflective Tube: The captured light is channeled through a highly reflective tube that directs the light efficiently from the roof to the interior space. The interior surface of the tube is usually coated with a reflective material to minimize light loss.

Diffuser: At the end of the tube, inside the building, a diffuser spreads the light evenly throughout the space, creating a soft, natural illumination.

Minimal Heat Transfer: TDDs are designed to transfer light while minimizing heat gain or loss, making them energy efficient. They often include insulation and thermal barriers to maintain the building's energy performance.
