The Welcome Center at Aims Community College in Greeley, CO, spanning 105,720 square feet, stands out with its remarkable features. Crafted by Hord Coplan Macht and constructed by Fransen Pittman Construction, this three-story structure boasts a 1,600-seat auditorium, an 800-capacity ballroom, executive conference spaces, and outdoor patios offering stunning vistas.

One of the challenges faced by Hord Coplan Macht was maintaining an open-concept staircase capable of accommodating 325 occupants for egress on the upper floors. Collaborating with Keith Lunsford and the team at Powers Products in Denver, CO, the focus was primarily on aesthetics, as noted by Lunsford.

The solution involved a substantial wide-span opening protection system. This system, including a 20’ wide by 30’ tall Auto-Set® Model FSFD, was specified by Powers to meet the 2-hour fire-rated requirement for the exit passageway connecting floors 1-3 through the atrium. Despite its weight of 7,000 lbs., a structural engineer was enlisted to design the necessary support to manage the load.

Moreover, a 14’ wide by 11’ tall Safescape® S7700 sliding fire door system, equipped with an integrated door for egress, was incorporated. This system, with a 2-hour fire rating, ensured essential egress between the auditorium and the stairwell.

Overall, the application proved to be highly successful. The grand open stair not only serves a functional purpose within the facility but also stands as a key architectural feature of the building.
